Why Fresh Del Monte and not Chiquita?

Most companies that are dominating the banana world like Chiquita and Dole are in private hands now. Dole is for example owned by David H. Murdock. Chiquita is taken over by the Brazilian company Cutrale and Brazilian bank Safra.

On company websites they all indicate similar message that they have responsible business practices and that sustainability is a management practice that guides their daily business activities everywhere they operate. However, NGO’s show that the industry is not sustainable at all. And how could it be if one kilo banana’s are sold in supermarkets for only 99 eurocents?  On top of that, the trade of banana’s is highly concentrated and producers and supermarkets have a lot of power, resulting in the following breakdown. This art project does not want to claim that Fresh Del Monte is worse than Chiquita or Dole. We are introducing and investigating a new art form that influences business. An art performance that stimulates reflection and discussion on what we taste and what we do not and how that affects our values. Thats the only way art can take over business. To start with Del Monte!
